Read the sidewall
Every trailer tire carries its size on the sidewall, stamped in a string like ST235/80R16. The ST prefix marks it as a Special Trailer tire, the first number is section width in millimetres, the second is the aspect ratio, R means radial construction, and the last number is the wheel diameter. Read it off the tire you are replacing and match it exactly — a size that is close is not a size that fits.Load range matters more than tread
The letter following the size is the load range, and on the contractor trailers we service it is the single specification people get wrong. A tandem axle dump running loaded five days a week is not asking the same thing of a tire as a utility trailer that moves twice a month. Undersize the load range and the tire runs hot, and heat is what destroys trailer tires long before tread depth does.| Load range | Capacity per tire | Pressure | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| D | approx. 2,540 lb | 65 psi | Utility, small cargo |
| E | approx. 3,000 lb | 80 psi | Tandem cargo, dump |
| G | up to 3,750 lb | 110 psi | Equipment, gooseneck |

Fitment, Brands & Fitting
Measuring your bolt pattern
Count your lugs before anything else. Five lug wheels are measured from the centre of one stud to the outer edge of the stud two along — the odd count means you cannot measure straight across. Four, six and eight lug wheels do measure across, centre to centre on opposite studs. Most metro cargo and utility trailers land on 5 on 4.5; tandem cargo and mid-size dumps on 6 on 5.5; equipment, deckover and gooseneck decks on 8 on 6.5. We stock all four, plus 5 on 5.Brands we carry
We stock Vanguard and Trailer King across the common sizes, with PowerKing covering the 17.5 inch commercial fitment. Ask us which line suits how you use the trailer.Mounting, balancing and bearings
Our service department mounts and balances everything we sell, and can repack wheel bearings, check brakes and replace axles while the trailer is here. Closer to the lakeshore? Our sister store Holland Trailer carries the same lines.Contractor & Fleet Tire Replacement
These tires go onto working trailers — dump bodies, equipment decks, enclosed cargo running the metro five or six days a week. Those trailers wear tires differently from the ones that come out twice a summer, and the replacement decision is different too.Wear versus age
A weekend utility trailer almost always ages out before it wears out: the rubber degrades sitting still and the tread is barely touched. A loaded dump trailer does the opposite. It puts real miles on under weight, and the tread will hit the wear bars while the DOT date code still looks recent. If you are running trailers commercially, inspect on tread depth and heat, not on the calendar — and if you are running them occasionally, do the reverse.Match tires across an axle pair
On a tandem axle, mismatched tires do not share load evenly. A tire with more tread or higher pressure carries more than its share, runs hotter, and fails first — then the survivor takes the whole corner and fails next. Replace tandems in pairs at minimum, and keep the load range consistent across all four.Keeping a spare that actually fits
The mounted assemblies in the table above are the reason to buy a spare rather than a bare tire. A bare tire on the shoulder of I-96 is not a spare, it is a problem. If you run more than a couple of trailers, it is worth standardising bolt patterns across the fleet so one spare covers several units — tell us what you are running and we will work out whether that is possible with what you have.Multiple trailers
If you are replacing tires across a fleet rather than one unit, call before you come in. We can check what is on the shelf, pull the sizes together, and schedule the mounting so your trailers are not sitting here during a work week.Trailer Tire FAQs
It depends entirely on how the trailer is used. A trailer that works most weeks will wear its tread out first — inspect on depth and on how hot the tires are running. A trailer that sits will age out long before the tread goes, because the sidewall rubber breaks down whether or not the trailer moves. For occasional-use trailers, three to five years is the honest window. The four-digit DOT code on the sidewall gives you the week and year it was built.
Read it off the tire already on the trailer. The size is stamped into the sidewall as something like ST235/80R16, and it needs to match exactly — width, aspect ratio and wheel diameter all have to line up. Load range matters just as much on a working trailer, so check the letter too. If the sidewall is scuffed past reading, bring the wheel to the counter on 28th Street or send us a photo.
A passenger tire is built to flex, because a car has suspension and steering to absorb what the road does. A trailer has neither, so an ST tire is built stiff — heavier sidewall, higher load rating at the same nominal size. Put passenger tires on a loaded trailer and you get sway, heat and a short life. It is not a saving worth making.
Start by counting lugs. On an even count — four, six or eight — measure straight across from the centre of one stud to the centre of the stud opposite. On a five lug wheel there is no stud directly opposite, so measure from the centre of one to the outer edge of the stud two positions round. We stock 5 on 4.5, 5 on 5, 6 on 5.5 and 8 on 6.5.
Give us a call and ask. We mount and balance everything we sell, and the service department can repack bearings, check brakes and look over the axle while the trailer is on site. Whether we can take outside tires depends on how the shop is running that day, so a call ahead saves you a trip.
