When a bumper pull runs out of trailer

A gooseneck moves the hitch point from behind the truck to over the rear axle, and almost everything people like about them follows from that one change: more stable at highway speed, tighter in a yard, and able to carry ratings a bumper pull cannot reach. Anything currently on the lot appears below. If the list is short, tell us what you need to move and we will work out the right configuration and build a quote.

What a gooseneck changes about towing

Gooseneck is a hitch style, not a trailer type. The same deck can be built as a bumper pull or a gooseneck, and the decision usually comes down to the truck you already own and the weight you intend to put behind it.

Where the weight sits

On a bumper pull, tongue weight hangs off the back of the truck, past the rear axle, and levers the front end up. A gooseneck puts that same load directly over the axle instead. The truck squats evenly, the steering stays planted and crosswinds stop shoving the back of the rig around. The practical effect shows up around the seventy mile an hour mark, where a long bumper pull starts to feel busy and a gooseneck simply does not.

You need the truck before you need the trailer

A gooseneck requires a hitch mounted in the bed, which means a three quarter ton or one ton pickup in nearly every case, plus the frame-mounted rails or a puck system to carry it. Check the truck rating for gooseneck towing specifically, because it is usually a different and higher number than the conventional towing figure in the same manual. If the truck is not set up yet, budget for the install before you budget for the trailer.

Length you can actually turn

Because the pivot point sits ahead of the rear axle, a gooseneck follows the truck through a turn more tightly than a bumper pull of the same length. That is why forty foot goosenecks exist and forty foot bumper pulls generally do not. It also means the deck can swing into the side of the truck bed if you jackknife, so the first few tight reversals are worth practicing somewhere forgiving.

Dovetails, hydraulics and deck height

Most gooseneck decks sit higher than a bumper pull because the neck has to clear the bed rail. That raises your loading angle, which is why dovetails, flip-over ramps and hydraulic dovetails are so common in this category. A hydraulic tail costs more and adds weight, but if you load a machine alone every day it pays for itself in shoulders.

Getting one ordered

Gooseneck stock turns over quickly and the configurations vary far more than they do on a utility trailer, so what sits on the lot at any moment is only part of the picture. Come in with the machine weight, the deck length you think you need and the truck you will pull with, and we can size it properly and order the build. Trade-ins go against it the same as anything else, and financing is available.

Gooseneck questions

What truck do I need to pull a gooseneck?+

In almost every case a three quarter ton or one ton pickup with a gooseneck hitch installed in the bed. Half ton trucks are rarely rated for it and usually cannot carry the pin weight. Check the gooseneck figure in your owner manual rather than the conventional tow rating.

Is a gooseneck better than a bumper pull?+

For heavy loads and long decks, yes. It tracks more steadily at speed, turns tighter and reaches higher weight ratings. For lighter work, a bumper pull is cheaper, tows behind far more vehicles and does not require a hitch installed in the bed.

What is the difference between a gooseneck and a fifth wheel?+

They do the same job with different hardware. A gooseneck uses a ball in the truck bed and a coupler on the trailer neck. A fifth wheel uses a plate and kingpin, the arrangement you see on semi trailers and most large RVs. Gooseneck hardware takes up less bed space and is the standard on work trailers.

Can you install a gooseneck hitch in my truck?+

Talk to our service department about what your truck needs. Hitch options differ a great deal between makes, model years and bed configurations, so it is worth a conversation before anything is ordered.

Do you have goosenecks in stock right now?+

Whatever is on the lot is listed above, and that changes week to week. If nothing there fits, we can order the deck length, ratings and options you need. Call us and we will work through the specification with you.
