Built in Michigan, not shipped in from three states south
Enclosed cargo, dedicated work trailers and long tandem-axle haulers, in widths from 5 feet up to 8.5 feet, and it is the line we carry in the most depth. Whether you are running tools to a job site around Grand Rapids or heading for Detroit or Indianapolis with a car behind you, there is a Darkhorse build for it.
Which Darkhorse model fits the job?
Darkhorse builds four main lines. They overlap on size, so the useful question is not how big the trailer is, but what it has to put up with.
DHW: the wedge nose, and the one most people leave with
Darkhorse calls the DHW its best seller, and it is the shape most people picture when they think enclosed trailer. The wedge nose cuts drag at highway speed. The range runs from a 5x8 single axle up to an 8.5x24 tandem, with single axle covering 5 to 7 feet wide and tandem picking up from 7 feet. Standard build is a one-piece aluminum roof, .030 exterior metal, tube framing, three-quarter inch performance flooring, LED lighting throughout, and rubberized coating on the tongue and bumpers.
DHF: flat front, same bones
The DHF is the flat-nose version, 6 to 8.5 feet wide and 10 to 24 feet long. Single axle runs up to the 6.5x14, and 7 feet and wider is tandem. Brakes are standard on every tandem and on the 6.5x14, optional on the smaller single axles. Underneath it is the same package: three-quarter inch floor, 6mm plywood walls, one-piece aluminum roof, automotive-grade undercoating, four recessed 5,000 lb D-rings and a three-year limited warranty.
DWRK: the work trailer
The DWRK is the one built for trades. Seven configurations from 7x14 through 8.5x24, all tandem axle with a 4 inch drop. TA35 models are rated at 7,000 lb GVWR and TA52 models go to 9,990 lb. Floor crossmembers sit on 16 inch centers, walls are 3/8 inch plywood over the three-quarter inch floor, and there are four recessed 5,000 lb D-rings plus a breakaway battery for the brakes. Undercoating and rubberized armor coating are standard, because this is a trailer that lives outside.
DSTT: sport, track and trail
The DSTT is the long one, meant for sleds, side-by-sides and race gear. Eleven configurations from 7.5x19 up to 8.5x31, interior widths of 86 inches on the 7.5 foot models and 96 inches on the 8.5 foot models, and interior lengths from 18.5 to 30.5 feet. All tandem axle, electric brakes standard, rated from 7,000 lb up to 9,990 lb depending on the build. It comes with a 36 inch RV side door, a rear ramp door and nine flush-mount D-rings, which is the detail that matters when you are tying down more than one machine.
What 1500, 2500 and 3500 mean
The number after the model name is the trim level. It mostly comes down to how tightly the frame is spaced and what gets upgraded.
| Series | What you get |
|---|---|
| 1500 | The standard build. Tube framing on 24 inch spacing, aluminum trim, three-quarter inch flooring, LED lighting. |
| 2500 | Frame spacing tightens to 16 inches. Adds stabilizer jacks, upgraded door options and semi-screwless exterior. |
| 3500 | Six inches of extra height, so 78 inches inside. Reinforced 16 inch spacing throughout, rear spoiler, dual LED dome lights with loading lights, and a heavier double-tube ramp door. |
If the trailer is going to be loaded and unloaded every working day, the tighter 16 inch spacing on the 2500 and 3500 is the upgrade that pays for itself. If it hauls on weekends, the 1500 is usually plenty.
Warranty, and what comes as standard
Every line carries a three-year limited warranty, with LED lighting throughout, automotive-grade undercoating and recessed D-rings fitted as standard rather than sold as an upsell. With the factory in White Pigeon, parts and warranty questions do not turn into a month of waiting. And if nothing in the range is quite right, Darkhorse will build to order.
Financing, trade-ins and service
We can sort out financing before you come in, take your old trailer as a trade-in, and look after the new one through our service department. If you are not sure what size you need, renting one first is a sensible way to find out. Want a wider look at enclosed options? See all cargo and enclosed trailers, or get in touch and we will talk it through.
Closer to the lakeshore?
Our sister store in Holland carries Darkhorse too. If you are coming from Holland, Zeeland or the lakeshore, that is the shorter drive.
