Read the size and rating off a Sure-Trac model number
Sure-Trac puts the numbers that matter into the model name. In an ST-UTW8216-070, the 82 is roughly the deck width in inches, the 16 is the deck length in feet, and the 070 is the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) in hundreds of pounds, so 7,000 lb. Use the code to narrow the list quickly, then confirm the GVWR on the listing itself before you buy.
| Model ends in | GVWR shown on the listing |
|---|---|
| -030 | 2,990 to 3,000 lb |
| -050 | 5,000 lb |
| -070 | 7,000 lb |
| -100 | 9,900 lb |
| -140 | 14,000 lb |
Common sizes and what they carry
Utility and landscape trailers come in a handful of sizes, and most people find their answer in one of these.
6x10 and 6x12. Single axle, usually rated around 2,990 lb. A riding mower, a load of yard waste, an ATV, a move across town. The size most homeowners end up with.
7x12 and 7x14. A foot more width, which is what lets you walk down the side of a load instead of climbing over it. The 7x14 is available at 7,000 lb on a tandem axle, so it takes a second machine or a pallet of block.
8x16 and 8x20. An 82-inch deck at 7,000 lb and up. Long material, two machines, or a compact skid steer if the rating covers it.
Measure your machines at their widest before you assume two will sit abreast, and measure the gate or driveway the trailer has to get through at home.
Painted steel or galvanized
Painted steel is the usual starting point and costs less up front. Galvanized steel is coated in zinc, which keeps protecting the metal in the places where paint chips and lets rust in. That difference shows up on trailers that run on salted Michigan roads through the winter or sit outside uncovered. If that sounds like yours, browse our galvanized trailers or read why galvanized trailers last longer in Michigan winters.
Match the trailer to the work
For weekend jobs at home, a 5 or 6 foot wide deck between 8 and 12 feet long covers most of it: yard waste, a riding mower, bags of mulch, moving day. Contractors and landscape crews usually step up to an 82-inch-wide deck and a higher rating, because a second machine or a stack of pallets adds weight fast. If the load is a skid steer or a mini excavator, look at our equipment trailers, and for loose material you would rather tip than shovel, our dump trailers.
If you are working to a budget, check the used trailers that come through on trade, and our round-up of the best utility trailer brands is worth a read before you decide. Only need one for a weekend? We also rent trailers by the day and the week.

Utility Trailer FAQs
Subtract the trailer's empty weight from its GVWR. A trailer rated at 2,990 lb that weighs 1,000 lb empty can carry roughly 1,990 lb, and that includes straps, ramps and anything else riding on it. Both figures are on each listing's detail page.
A 6x10 or 6x12 single axle covers most homeowner jobs. Crews and contractors usually move up to a 7x14 or an 82-inch-wide deck, where there is room for a second machine and a higher weight rating to carry it.
The last three digits of a Sure-Trac model are its weight rating in hundreds of pounds. A -030 model is rated at about 3,000 lb, most listed at 2,990 lb, and a -070 at 7,000 lb. The listing's GVWR field is the figure to go by.
Price depends on size, weight rating and how it is built, so every trailer on this page shows its own price on its listing. Galvanized costs more than painted steel, and a tandem axle costs more than a single.
Used trailers come through on trade and they turn over quickly. Whatever is on the lot today is listed on our used trailers page, alongside the clearance center.
Yes. Our rental fleet includes utility and single-axle trailers alongside enclosed cargo and car haulers, at daily and weekly rates, which is often the better answer for a one-off job or a move.
It is the situation where galvanized earns its cost. A zinc coating keeps protecting the steel after the surface is scratched, while a chip in paint can let rust start. If the trailer lives indoors and stays off salted roads, painted steel holds up well with basic care.
Check the towing capacity in your owner's manual and the ratings on your hitch receiver and ball. Plan around the loaded weight, trailer plus cargo, not the empty weight. The lowest of those numbers is your limit.
Make sure the coupler is latched and pinned, the safety chains are crossed under the tongue, the lights work and the tires are at the pressure on the sidewall. Load with more of the weight ahead of the axle than behind it. Our guides on how to hook up a trailer and tongue weight go further.
