Buying an equipment trailer without guessing

Most people arrive knowing the machine they own and very little about the trailer it needs. That is the right way round – the machine decides almost everything.

Start with weight, not deck length

Look up the operating weight of your machine, then add the attachments you actually carry. A skid steer that weighs 7,000 pounds bare can land close to 9,000 with a bucket, forks and a full tank. That total needs to sit comfortably under the trailer GVWR, not scrape it. A trailer loaded to its limit stops badly, wears tires fast and leaves you nothing spare the day you borrow a heavier machine.

The other number that matters is your truck. Payload, hitch rating and brake capacity all cap what you can legally pull. Bring the door-jamb sticker off your truck and we can work it out together in a couple of minutes.

Deck height changes how you load

A low-profile deck sits closer to the ground, which flattens the approach angle for anything with low clearance – scissor lifts, mini excavators, tracked machines. A standard deck gives more ground clearance underneath and usually more frame depth. If you have ever scraped a lift on the ramps, you already know which one you want. If the machine is only part of the job and you are also hauling tools and material, the contractor trailers page covers the work-spec enclosed and dump options.

Ramps, tilt or dovetail

Slide-out ramps are lighter and cheaper and they suit machines you load a few times a month. A tilt deck removes the ramp lift entirely, which your back notices if you load daily. A dovetail gives a shallower angle without carrying ramps at all. None is better in the abstract; it depends on how often you load and what you are loading.

Bumper pull or gooseneck

Bumper pull covers most of what contractors move around West Michigan and it hooks to any truck with the right hitch. A gooseneck buys stability and a higher rating once you are into serious weight, at the cost of a bed hitch and a wider turning circle. Moving one machine and a load of attachments, bumper pull is usually enough.

What we stock in Grandville

Diamond C equipment haulers in low-profile and heavy-duty builds, in the 20 and 24 foot lengths that cover most skid steer, tractor and lift work, plus BND galvanized equipment trailers for anyone working near salt, water or year-round Michigan weather. Galvanizing costs more up front and ends the annual argument with rust underneath.

Everything we sell can be serviced here. Bearings, brakes, lights and decking are handled in the shop on 28th Street, so the trailer does not have to go somewhere else the first time it needs something. See the service department or value your trade-in.

Equipment trailer questions

What size equipment trailer do I need?+
Start from the operating weight of your machine with attachments fitted, then leave headroom under the trailer GVWR rather than running at the limit. Deck length follows from the machine footprint plus room to strap it down. Bring the machine model and your truck door-jamb sticker and we will size it at the counter.
Will my truck tow it?+
Three numbers decide it: your truck payload, the hitch rating and, on heavier trailers, brake capacity. A half-ton pickup handles a light bumper-pull equipment trailer; a loaded 24 foot deck with a skid steer usually wants a three-quarter ton or larger. We check this before you buy, not after.
What is the difference between a low-profile and a standard deck?+
A low-profile deck sits nearer the ground, so ramps meet it at a shallower angle. That matters for scissor lifts, mini excavators and anything with low ground clearance. A standard deck gives more clearance underneath and more frame depth. Both are in stock in Grandville.
Is a galvanized trailer worth the extra?+
If the trailer lives outside through Michigan winters, or goes anywhere near salt or water, galvanizing pays for itself in the years you do not spend grinding and repainting. If it is stored inside and used occasionally, a painted frame is usually enough.
Can you service the trailer after I buy it?+
Yes. Bearings, brakes, wiring, lights and decking are all handled in our own shop on 28th Street in Grandville, on any make of trailer, not only the ones we sold.
